The judge will hear the case regarding the private data of minors on January 29.
D.C. District Court Judge Randall Moss has announced that he would hear arguments from Meta and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on January 29, advancing Meta’s latest attempt to stop the FTC from banning the company’s practice of collecting the data of children.
Meta profits from the sale of personal data collected from those who use the company’s social media platforms, which include Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp. The company reached an agreement with the FTC to settle extensive user privacy violations in 2019, which fined Meta $5 billion and limited the extent of their data collection practices.
However, the FTC became aware earlier this year of similar data collection violations being made by Meta against children and proposed modifying the agreement to outright ban the collection of data from Meta account users below the age of 18. Meta filed an appeal in November to transfer agreement negotiations out of the FTC and into the District Court for the District of Columbia, which was denied.
